Speech by H.E. Lili Grammatika, Ambassador of Greece to Romania, Marking 205 Years Since the Greek Independence Revolution

I feel honoured and also very moved to be addressing this extraordinary assembly of compatriots, and of friends of Greece, in this beautiful Ateneul Roman in celebration of the National Day of Greece.

What makes this occasion in Romania always very special is the fact that we are marking the launch for the Greek Independence Revolution, now 205 years ago, in the land where it actually began in 1821, in Iasi by the scion of a Greek Phanariot ruler, Prince Alexandros Ypsilantis, whose mother came from an aristocratic Romanian boyar family, the Vacarescu. This aptly reflects how the bonds between Greeks and Romanians intertwine through centuries of interactions, creating strong bridges of cooperation between our two countries.
